Sheetal Devi: Archery Pioneer’s Inspiring Journey to Khelo India Glory

As the countdown begins for the groundbreaking Khelo India Para Games starting on December 10, 2023, Sheetal Devi, India’s pioneering armless archer, emerges as an emblem of inspiration. Her extraordinary journey, embellished with double gold victories at the 4th Asian Para Games and subsequent achievements at the Asian Para Championship, stands as a testament to unyielding determination.

Having clinched a quota for the Paris Paralympics, Sheetal now gears up to adorn herself with more accolades, this time representing the pride of Jammu and Kashmir.

Confronting the distinctive challenge of competing against familiar faces, Sheetal articulates, “Playing at home against fellow archers feels different; everyone knows each other well. It’s going to be tough.” Born in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, with Phocomelia, Sheetal’s journey defies expectations, captivating the nation’s heart.

Reflecting on her formative years, Sheetal reminisces about using her legs for tasks normal kids accomplish with their hands. “I loved going to school and aspired to become a teacher. When teachers assigned tasks, I wrote with my leg. I had no other option but to use my legs in ways others couldn’t imagine,” she shares.

With a mere two years in archery, Sheetal eagerly anticipates the Khelo India Para Games, a platform she had fervently longed for.

“I want to win as many medals as possible for Jammu. Competing with close friends will be a different feeling,” she adds with a grin.

Sheetal Devi’s odyssey symbolizes breaking barriers and reshaping possibilities. Stepping onto the archery range in New Delhi, she not only carries her personal aspirations but also becomes the beacon of hope for those who see her as a symbol of courage and possibility.
