Embarking on an extraordinary journey in the past 12 months, Indian rifle three positions shooter Sift Kaur Samra has etched her name as a formidable force in the shooting world. From clinching an Asian Games gold with a record-breaking performance to securing an Olympics quota, her achievements stand as a testament to her remarkable prowess. The excitement continues as she successfully defended her national title, paving the way for an even grander challenge – the Olympics in Paris.
Sift’s exceptional year unfolded with a standout performance at the Asian Games, where she fearlessly outperformed world champion Qiongyue Zhang of China, setting a world record with an impressive score of 469.6. Reflecting on the intense competition, she revealed, “I could feel the pressure when the final started. After the first five shots, I told myself I can handle it, I can perform well here. Then, my focus was on getting my technique right.”
A defining moment in her triumph was defeating Zhang, a feat she duplicated in August at the World University Games in Chengdu, China, alongside Ashi Chouksey. Sift expressed her thrill, stating, “I was thrilled to beat the Chinese shooters at their home twice.”
Ascending swiftly since joining the junior India team in 2021, Sift has garnered numerous accolades, including gold in the Junior World Cup in Suhl and a series of team medals. This season commenced with a bronze at the Bhopal World Cup before she secured the Paris Olympics quota for India.
At the national championships, Sift outshone Tokyo Olympian Anjum Moudgil, solidifying her status as the golden girl of the moment. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, “It has been a remarkable year. I have worked very hard to come so far, and I want to keep enjoying this moment.”
