In an exhilarating match that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Indian women’s hockey team secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan, sealing their well-deserved place in the semifinals of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy. This pivotal win marked India’s fourth consecutive triumph in the tournament, and the game certainly lived up to the pre-match anticipation.

After two goalless quarters, Navneet Kaur’s 31st-minute strike and Sangita Kumari’s crucial goal in the 47th minute propelled India to victory. Japan managed to pull one back with Kana Urata scoring in the 37th minute, setting the stage for a fierce contest between two undefeated teams in the tournament.

India’s impressive journey in the tournament began with a dominant 7-1 victory over Thailand in their opening match. They continued their winning streak with convincing triumphs over Malaysia (5-0) and China (2-1), showcasing their prowess on the field. Japan, too, had an unblemished record coming into this match, having defeated Malaysia (3-0), South Korea (4-0), and Thailand (4-0) in their previous encounters.

The initial quarter of the match witnessed a fierce battle between India’s attacking strategies and Japan’s rock-solid defense. While India applied relentless pressure on the opposition’s goal, Japan relied on counter-attacks but couldn’t breach India’s resolute defense.

The first quarter concluded without any goals, despite Japan having a promising opportunity in the form of a penalty corner in the 13th minute, expertly defended by Ishika Chaudhary. The second quarter mirrored the first, with both teams unable to create significant scoring chances.

The match’s turning point came a minute after the quarter break when Navneet Kaur found the back of the net with a powerful backhand shot after a deceptive pass from Salima Tete. Japan responded swiftly, drawing level with a well-executed penalty corner conversion by Kana Urata.

The final quarter brought electrifying action to the field, with end-to-end hockey on display. It was India who emerged as the dominant side, taking the lead with a deflected goal from Sangita, courtesy of a penalty corner.

Japan fought back hard in search of an equalizer, but the Indian defense stood strong, ensuring their winning streak continued. Despite securing another penalty corner in the 53rd minute, Japan couldn’t find the back of the net, and India held on for a thrilling 2-1 victory.
