In a historic moment for Asian tennis, Leander Paes, the former doubles world No. 1, and renowned broadcaster Vijay Amritraj have etched their names as the first Asian men to be inducted into the esteemed International Tennis Hall of Fame. The accolade, considered the Ultimate Honour in Tennis, also extends to distinguished journalist and writer Richard Evans.
Paes, an 18-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles, achieves this milestone in the player category, while Amritraj and the UK’s Evans enter as contributors. The contributor category, evaluated every two years, acknowledges individuals or groups who have left a transcendent impact on the sport.
The Class of 2024, including Paes, Amritraj, and Evans, is set to be officially inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday in Newport, Rhode Island. This prestigious recognition elevates India to the 28th nation represented in the Hall of Fame, joining an elite group of 264 inductees from 27 nations.

Leander Paes, a stalwart in the tennis world, spent three decades making an indelible mark. Paes, tied with the legendary Martina Navratilova for the most mixed doubles major titles, is one of three men in tennis history to secure a career Grand Slam in both doubles and mixed doubles. His partnership with Martina Hingis marked a historic feat as one of only two mixed doubles teams in the Open Era to complete a career Grand Slam together.
Beyond the Grand Slam glory, Paes spent a remarkable 462 weeks inside the ATP doubles top 10, including an impressive 37 weeks at No. 1. His contribution to Davis Cup, winning a record 45 doubles rubbers, and representing India in a record seven consecutive Olympic Games exemplify his unwavering dedication to the sport.
