Djokovic’s Grit and Glory: The Unforgettable Battle in Paris
In a breathtaking display of resilience, world number one Novak Djokovic staged an incredible comeback to secure his place in the Paris Masters quarter-finals. Facing off against Tallon Griekspoor, Djokovic was put through the wringer but ultimately triumphed with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Unlike his smooth second-round victory, Djokovic appeared rusty in only his second singles match since his Davis Cup appearance six weeks ago. He experienced a rollercoaster of a match, surrendering a 4-1 lead in the first set and squandering three break opportunities early in the second.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, however, summoned his inner strength and determination to mount a remarkable comeback. He convincingly won the tiebreak and then proceeded to claim the decider, persisting in his quest for a historic seventh Paris Masters title.
This victory was far from routine for Djokovic, who had returned to action just a day earlier with a commanding win over Tomas Etcheverry. This time, he had to claw his way back from a set down, enduring a battle that spanned two hours and 39 minutes.
In a post-match interview, Djokovic admitted, “I ran out of steam, I’ve been struggling the last couple of days with my stomach, and I didn’t feel like myself at all on the court. It could’ve easily gone his way, but I played a good tiebreak and started to feel better in the third. I’m really happy I overcame this challenge.”
Meanwhile, fourth seed Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament due to health reasons, following his grueling second-round clash against Mackenzie McDonald that ended in the early hours of the morning. This led to a change in the match schedule, with Australia’s Alex de Minaur now set to face the in-form Andrey Rublev, the fifth-seed Russian who notched his 20th Masters 1000 win of the season.
In other matches, seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas secured his spot at the ATP Finals with a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over German 10th seed Alexander Zverev. The Greek sensation will lock horns with Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals, as the 16th seed overcame fellow Russian Roman Safiullin with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the 11th seed, kept his hopes alive for a spot at the tournament in Turin by defeating Argentine Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-3.
