In a heart-pounding clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Australian cricketing juggernaut showcased its supremacy, defeating Pakistan by a compelling margin of 62 runs in the ICC World Cup.
After amassing a formidable total of 368, Australia’s dynamic duo, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, emerged as the heroes of the day. Their electrifying partnership, worth 259 runs, made cricketing history, ranking as the second-best for opening wickets in World Cup matches and the finest for any wicket in ODIs hosted in Bengaluru.
However, this partnership almost faced an early demise when Warner was granted a lifeline, escaping Usama Mir’s clutches at mid-on off Shaheen Afridi’s bowling when he had only scored 10. Nevertheless, Warner capitalized on this reprieve, unleashing a stunning display of shots, including sensational ramp shots behind the square.
Marsh’s innings, in contrast, were relatively error-free, and his 121-run contribution was supported by Pakistan’s inconsistent bowling. The Men in Green struggled to find the right line and length, erring on the side of either too short or too full. The duo of Haris Rauf and Usama Mir bore the brunt of this inconsistency, conceding a total of 165 runs in their combined 17 overs.
Warner and Marsh marked their centuries in the 31st over, propelling Australia past the 200-run mark. Even after Shafique dropped Warner again at 105, it was a seemingly unstoppable evening for Australia.
However, the re-introduction of Afridi (5/54) stemmed the tide to a degree, dismissing Marsh and Maxwell in consecutive deliveries. Despite this brief resurgence, Pakistan’s bowling soon reverted to an erratic pattern. Warner, with a colossal six over mid-wicket, reached an impressive 150. His eventual dismissal initiated a late collapse, with Australia managing just 42 runs in the final 46 balls. Nevertheless, this imposing total proved insurmountable for Pakistan.
In response to the daunting target, Pakistan’s Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq initiated a promising start with a 134-run partnership. But inspired bowling changes and a sensational catch to dismiss Babar Azam by Adam Zampa swung the momentum in Australia’s favor. Cummins and Stoinis further tightened the screws on Pakistan, and Mohammad Rizwan’s dismissal extinguished any hope of a remarkable turnaround.
Australia’s victory by 62 runs was a testament to their batting prowess and relentless spirit. This match, filled with thrilling moments and record-breaking performances, added another thrilling chapter to the ICC World Cup 2023.
