Rugby and India share a deep-rooted history, and in the highly anticipated 2023 Asian Games, Sheetal Sharma, the captain of India’s Rugby 7s team, is set to exemplify the nation’s fervor and prowess in the sport.
Following their triumphant qualification, Sheetal and her squad kickstarted their rigorous training camp on July 29 in the rugby stronghold of Kolkata, known as the birthplace of the legendary Calcutta Cup contested between England and Scotland.
Under the expert guidance of South African coach Ludwiche Van Deventer, the Indian team embarked on an intensive training expedition in Borneo from August 27 to September 6. This invaluable experience encompassed competitive matches against local Malaysian teams and intensive training sessions, providing crucial preparation for their upcoming major tournament.
The Indian players not only secured an impressive fourth place finish at the Borneo 7’s, but also unveiled a new tactical approach, the ‘Borneo Passes’, designed to surprise their opponents.
Having acclimated to similar weather conditions in both Malaysia and Kolkata, the team focused on adaptability and fluidity in positional play, ensuring they are primed for any challenge.
During the rigorous 50-60 day camp, the players engaged in three daily sessions, comprising of intensive rugby drills, conditioning, strength training, and dedicated gym workouts. Additionally, the team integrated fun and psychology sessions to enhance both physical and mental preparedness.
Sheetal underscored the significance of psychological support, particularly for young athletes enduring the demands of an extended camp. Creating an open and comfortable environment was essential in unlocking their full potential.
Reflecting on her journey, Sheetal highlighted the remarkable progress in women’s rugby, acknowledging increased support from sponsors and governments across various states, including valuable job opportunities for players.
With sights set on the Asian Games, Sheetal believes this participation is not only a short-term goal, but also a stepping stone to future success in prestigious tournaments like the Asian Trophy, Asian Championships, and Olympic qualifiers.
The Asian Games mark a significant milestone for Indian rugby, with potential to broaden its influence and reach. Undaunted by formidable opponents like Japan and Hong Kong, Sheetal and her team are armed with strategic analyses and an unyielding determination to give their all.
