India batting coach Vikram Rathour says Virat Kohli’s biggest quality is adaptability and says he’s batting really well.
Earlier this year, Virat Kohli ended his century drought in Test cricket with a brilliant knock of 186 against Australia in Ahmedabad. This century marked his return to three-figure scores in the format since November 2019 when he scored a century against Bangladesh in a day-night Test in Kolkata.
Although Kohli has registered centuries in all three formats in the past year or so, he is eager to break another slump by scoring a Test century in an overseas match. His last century away from home was against Australia, where he made 123 in Perth back in December 2018. Since then, he has played 19 Tests without reaching the milestone while playing abroad.
Despite coming close on several occasions, most recently with a score of 76 in the first Test against West Indies in Dominica, Kohli has not been able to convert those innings into centuries. India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour, believes that Kohli’s prolonged good form naturally led to a lean phase, stating that it was expected after such a sustained period of success.
Rathour also highlighted the challenging circumstances that affected Kohli’s chances of scoring overseas centuries, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in limited games and restrictions. He reassured that there is not much cause for concern regarding Kohli’s century drought in away Tests.
As the batting coach, Rathour emphasized Kohli’s ability to adapt his game according to the conditions and the team’s requirements. He praised Kohli’s biggest quality as his capacity to play different formats differently, demonstrating his versatility in the past.
